The world’s most popular sport is back with its biggest tournament the FIFA World Cup. This is the 21st FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia. In the last 3 days games this world cup has witnessed some surprises with Ronaldo scoring a hat trick for Portugal to draw against Spain and Germany losing to Mexico. With more such events about to happen we bring to you some facts about FIFA World Cup.

This world cup is the first world cup to be held in two continents, Russia being 25% in Europe and 75% in Asia. This is the first time Russia is hosting the event.

The Mascot for this world cup is Wolf called zabivaka chosen by online voting and McDonald’s is the official food partner for the event.

The first world cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay in this World Cup Uruguay defeated Argentina by 4-2 and lifted the first ever world cup.

Brazil has the most World Cup titles with five to it’s name(1958,1962,1970 and 2002) and Germany and Italy being at the second position with four titles each.

The all time highest scorer is Miroslav Klose with 16 goals in 4 World Cups. The sixteenth goal being scored in the unforgettable 7-1 win against Brazil in the 2014 world cup. With this goal klose surpassed the previous record held by Brazil’s Ronaldo who had scored 15 goals in 3 World Cups.

The record for most goals scored by a team in single world cup match is with Hungary. They defeated El Salvador with final score line of 10-1 in 1982

The record for the highest goals in a single world cup is with France’s Just fontaine with 13 goals in a single world cup(1958) with an average of 2.17 per game.

Oleg Salenko, a Russian striker, holds the record for most goals scored in a single World Cup game. He scored 5 goals that helped his team to comfortably defeat Cameroon with final score line 6-1 in 1994.

Germany is also the team to play most number of finals with 8 and winning 4 of them. Netherlands is the team to play most number of finals without winning any with three the most recent being 2010 World Cup.
