In a recent incident, where an 18-year-old student at Bharti College ended her life by swallowed pesticide, then the concentration of Student’s Union groups has switched towards wellness care, the Counselor. Mahamedhaa Nagar, DUSU secretary, sent a letter to the DU Vice-Chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi and has appealed to set up ‘wellness cells’ in the different colleges of DU. However, according to an Indian Express report, DU’s counseling facility that is recognized as the Mind and Body Centre has just 1 counselor for over 1.3 lakh aspirants. Furthermore, this counseling facility is accessible only to women aspirants.
In a letter, Nagar wrote that aspirants are impotent to manage stress. They don’t have a place to express their thought. Aspirants are ambiguous about their future, they begin to confine themselves and in the course of time they lapse into depression. Therefore, DUSU suggested that DU should promptly take transform and introduce a new cell/society in all the colleges of DU. There should be a decent check proposed on the availability of professional counselors in DU colleges.
In 2015, Delhi University introduced a helpline number (1800-3000-7303) to help people with their integrated care and also to help them endure with stress, but as per the report, the helpline is now inactive.
The reports state that in-house counseling is offered by certain DU colleges including-Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Miranda House, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Jesus and Mary College, and Hansraj College. But Mind and Body Centre is the only wellness center that is presently being handled by the university administration and it provides integrated care for aspirant’s spontaneous and mental health needs.
Tanni Choudhary, a mental health counselor said that aspirants are trying to come ahead in spite of the taboo, but there is a compelling need for her, as an association, to go out and make aspirants and faculty know about the resources available. In spite of these services, nearly 5 aspirants of the university commit suicide every year due to many reasons like rejection, love, academic performance, stress, family issues etc. Around 30 consultations every month had done.
