Days after the DU administration had asked the ABVP to remove the bust of VD Savarkar, Bhagat and Subhas Chandra Bose installed at DU’s Arts faculty, Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president Shakti Singh has removed the busts at around 2am on Saturday. The busts of VD Savarkar, Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose, was installed at DU’s Arts Faculty on August 20. ABVP claimed that the busts were removed after the “DU administration gave assurance to ABVP that after DUSU elections, busts of freedom fighters will be re-installed following the procedure required.” The ABVP added that the busts have been kept safe by the University of Delhi. The student group reiterated that when the bust was installed they had asked DUSU to set up the statues only as per the procedure of the university. The ABVP also demanded legal action against those involved from NSUI in ‘insulting the freedom fighters’. Student organisations associated with left ideology, CYSS and NSUI have stooped down to a very low level and have given a major blow to the culture of debate and discussion, prevalent in the university,” ABVP said. ABVP Delhi’s state secretary Sidharth Yadav said “It is very unfortunate that the DU administration turned a deaf ear to DUSU’s demand for installation of busts of freedom fighters, for a very long time. University should restore these idols, as per their assurances, at the earliest.”
