The students of Delhi University School of Open Learning called off their hunger strike on Thursday which was against the introduction on the semester system from this academic year onwards. The decision to change to the semester system was taken by the Delhi University Executive Council last week. Following which students declared a hunger strike against the same.The students of the DU School of Open Learning and activists of the students’ group Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) began the hunger strike against the introduction of the semester system in SOL on Tuesday.

The KYS said that the students protesting in Thursday tried to return their old study material to the authorities of SOL but they refused to take it back. Following this, the students dumped their books outside the SOL building in protest. It was the actions of the students and the activists which forced the SOL authorities to call for a meeting with the student delegation. In the meeting conducted it was assured the students that the demands of the students will be considered.

The Delhi University Executive Council conducted a meeting with regard to introducing the semester system in the Delhi University School of Open Learning and the NCWEB also known as Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board. The students of Delhi University School of Open Learning, however, came forward with their disapproval over the decision stating that a lot of students have taken admission this academic year and the study materials have also been provided as per the annual system. The sudden change will mean that new study materials will have to be provided which has not been done by the university yet .
