Russia’s S-400 Missile System’s deal signed by India amid US threats :10 facts

One of the world’s most advanced long range is the air defence systems that reportedly hits targets 400 km away – S-400 . The deal is signed between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi .  Even after threat of sanctions from the United States , Indian will finally have the world’s most deadly surface to air missile system , S-400 Triumf .

Since time immemorial , Russia has been an important defence hardware supplier to India . Russian President has arrived Delhi on thursday for a two day visit to India accompanied by a high level delegation comprising Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Barisov , Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov . United States is insinuating at tough punishments against any country buying or wishing to buy advanced military hardware from Russia .

Russian President  fixated towards increasing cooperation between the two countries in order to fight towards the threat of terrorism and drug trafficking . S-400 is by all accounts one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defence systems. First nation to buy the S-400 missile system was China (2014). Numerous deliveries have already been started by Russia .

Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act or CAATSA —  under this act the US inflicts threats  on any country that has any “ “significant  transactions” with Iran, North Korea and Russia . New Delhi has already declared that it will make  the S-400 deal in spite of the threats by the United States . The delivery of the missiles is supposed to be in 24 months.

India and Russia have also signed several agreements in the sector of space ,  nuclear energy and railways . The two countries reportedly agreed to further cooperate in order to implement new nuclear power projects . This move is expected to be a breakthrough for the Make In India initiative as it will ultimately lead to manufacturing of nuclear fuel assemblies in India.

Key regional and global issues were also discussed by the two leaders , including US sanctions on import of Iranian Crude Oil .India is allegedly planning to buy 4 Krivak – class  frigates from Russia , two of which will be built in India at the Goa shipyard and two others from will be taken from Russia .India already has six similar operating frigates .

Apart from Japan , Russia is the only country with which India holds annual bilateral summits . This was the third meeting between  Russian President Putin and PM Modi this year after the informal meeting which was done in Russian Resort city of Sochi in may and a bilateral on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in South Africa.
