The alliance of Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS- students’ wing of the Aam Aadmi Party) and All India Students’ Association (AISA) may have an upper hand in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled on September 12.

The game changer could be the commitment of Kailash Gahlot, the Chairperson of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) Board placing the subject of allowing student passes in its air-conditioned (AC) buses in front of the cabinet for its consent, if the electors conveying via public transport have confidence in the word of the Delhi government.

A memorandum asking for the same was submitted to Gahlot by the potential candidates of the AISA-CYSS coalition after which the topic was initiated and the long standing demand was paid heed to.

Reportedly, the joint delegation of AAP said that the Delhi Chief Minister was taken in discussion twice, who, in succession assured a way out to the students and subsequently asked the concerned minister to make sure that a proposal concerning this is passed for making the student passes in force in AC buses from September 1. A representative of the delegation said, “Students have to wait for long hours in queues as the frequency of green buses is low and their passes are not valid for AC travel in DTC buses. Taking a red bus is too costly for students.”

The memorandum threw light on the issue of metro fare hikes claiming that it was just an unjustified and unrequired financial burden that the students were laden with, without a legitimate reason despite the disapproval from others and how the legality of students’ bus pass in AC buses will prove to be useful for students. It also requested the authorities to accelerate the procedure so as to refrain students from facing any difficulty.

The problem of lack of University-special buses for students was also assured to be resolved by the minister to the DUSU panel. The campaign for student elections, 2018 at the University of Delhi (DU) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is at its eleventh hour with student parties trying to address voters with their agendas.
