DU student targeted with ‘racial’ slurs, assaulted

students must try these things

A Manipuri student of Delhi University was allegedly beaten up after he objected to the alleged racial comments made by a group of 10-15 men early Saturday.

Students alleged that the fight started from an incident of road rage after which the men came with sticks and thrashed the student. A case of assault has been registered and police are trying to identify the accused.

According to Bibinaz Thokchom, an assistant professor with Ambedkar University, who is also a member of the advisory board of United Kakching Students, Delhi, the incident took place around 2.30am when the 20-year-old student Momocha (single name), was returning home to Vijay Nagar.

“Momocha was walking home with four friends. As told by him and other students, a speeding car tried to run over them. Momocha got furious and hit the car with a paper that he was holding. The car stopped and three occupants stepped out but the situation was controlled,” she said.

Thokchom said after 15 minutes, a group of 10-15 men carrying sticks came up to Momocha and his friends and roughed Momocha up. “They made racial comments. When Momocha objected, the men started thrashing him. Momocha suffered critical injuries. The men fled the spot. He was rushed to a hospital. He had a fractured right hand, multiple stitches on the jaw. None of the four others received injuries,” Thokchom said.

She said all five are students of DU. She also said Momocha was planning to leave for Manipur on Saturday afternoon. “Around 9am, a group of students gathered and went to Mukherjee Nagar police station where we got an FIR lodged,” she said.

A senior police officer said a case of assault has been registered and efforts to identify the miscreants are on.
