Delhi university has set unreasonably high standards by the first merit list which has left students with less college and course choices.
The third cut off list was released on June 29. The probability to get the subject or college of your choice has reduced considerably. Unlike last year, this year the university has set irrational standards for the candidates seeking admission to the undergraduate courses in the top-tier colleges.
One of the most reputed college of the Delhi university, Lady Shri Ram College, had set the first cut off list to 98.50 percent for reserving seat in bachelors of arts program. Courses such as economics and psychology whose admissions are merit based have seen an increase in their value by 0.25% in the first cut off. Altogether, the excessive demand of such courses with a limited availability of seats has made a minor increase in value significant. However, admission in economics course remain open in the college by the minimum requirement of 97.75%. admissions for the ‘general’ category students at lady shri ram college has closed down for all other arts stream courses in the third cut off.
Ojasvini Trivedi, who wants to pursue psychology, scored 95 percent in her board exams was highly distressed after the release of the first cut off. She was aiming for LSR, however, she landed up being disappointed. At last, she submitted her papers at jesus and mary college whose percentage is relatively less and is a known college.
Hindu college, a profound college, known for its department of political science also increased the required percentage for admission. There are 18 courses offered by the college out of which 14 courses admissions were closed after the release of third cut off.
However,admissions in ramjas college for various courses remain open seeking minimum percentage requirement of 95.5 percent in history hons. The open courses include English, economics and political science.
St. Stephens College, respectable for its economics course demands 98 percent for admission in economics. Being a self- directed college at Delhi University not only issues a ,merit list but also releases a list of the students enlisted for personal interviews which further limits the scope of admission in St. Stephens.
For those who were aspiring a bachelors degree in the area of commerce and business studies, the merit list has been relatively less harsh. Shri Ram College of Commerce preserved the necessary marks from last year.
A former student of Shri Ram School Aravali, Arjun Verma exclaims that a high cut off is no more surprising, however, he said that the cut offs have become realistic from past 2-3 years. With a score of 91 percent he only hopes to get into a good college and aim for chartered of accountancy.
Another known institution , Sri Venkateswara College released its first cut off with minimum requirement of 97.50 percent for seeking admission in Bachelors of Commerce. However, following the third merit list the percentage has declined by only 1 percent restricting students choices and increasing the struggle of students for admission.
When the question that comes into being is a high score required for admsiion in a good college, it also bring into light ensuring a good grading system. Perhaps, a uniform grading system could be useful.
