“Northeast India was rich in amphibian diversity, but this region is neglected as compared to western ghat hotpot in southern India” :said Prof. S D Bijju. Four new species of frog having “Fleshy horn like projection on the upper eyelids of some species” confirmed by PhD research work carried out by Stephen Mahony at DU and S.D. Bijju as well as at UCD are discovered in the forest of Meghalya and Arunachal Pradesh.
The scientists named thye four new Indian species as Himalayan horned frog (Megopheys himalayana) :the Gare while lipped horned frog (Megopheys oreophyta); the yello spotted white lipped horned grog (Meoghryd Flauipunetata); and the Giant Himalayan horned frig (Megophys Perosa). The study was published on Monday as a monograph in the scientific journal leotava.
The six of frogs are different as the belong to different species. Yellow spotted with white lipped horn frog is about 5.7-7.5 and is the smallest. While the Giant Himalayan horned frog measures abut 7.1-11.2cm , making it to the largest of the 15 horned frog species now known to ocean in north India.
