When the OBC reservation was implemented in 2007, Delhi University was promised additional teaching posts to match the number of students, but not all the notified posts were released, the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) said in a letter to Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar, on Wednesday.

Reservation for Economically Weaker Sections commences from this academic year.

“At Delhi University, the OBC expansion in terms of increase in student intake was completed by 2010. While the university and colleges received the first tranche [of teaching posts], we have been endlessly awaiting the delivery of the second tranche…” the letter stated.

The release of the posts in two instalments had been notified by the MHRD and the UGC. In this regard, the association says it has written to the MHRD and the UGC on multiple occasions.

The lack of teachers implies an adverse student-teacher ratio. DUTA says this has led to overcrowded classrooms, labs and longer than the UGC mandated 16-14 teaching hours. The lack of posts also affects the Choice Based Credit System implemented in 2015, since with a shortage of staff, colleges are unable to offer too many choices to students.

It also batted for the release of the second tranche of posts in the interest of the ad hoc teachers that have been working in the university for multiple years. It said that there will be displacement of many of them due to the implementation of the EWS reservation. This could be mitigated with the release of the post.
