Delhi University on 12th July, 2018 moved the National Green Tribunal in a plea sought to stay and quash the environment clearance for construction of a housing project granted to Young Builders Pvt. Ltd., nearby the university’s north Campus premises.
The judicial move also requests the NGT to constitute a committee to study the project’s irreversible immediate impact on the environment given that the Department of Forests has granted permission to remove 156 trees from the construction site.
The NGT’s bench considering the plea has issued notices to relevant authorities including the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority of Delhi, DMRC, DDA, Ministry of Environment and Forests seeking their statements regarding this matter before 14th August, 2018.
If the project comes to fruition, it would come under the silence zone as it is proposed to lie within 100m of distance from the University of Delhi- North Campus, an educational institute and the Vallabhai Patel Chest Institute- a super specialty hospital for cardiac diseases.
