With the Delhi University Student Union Elections all set to be held this September, the High Court of New Delhi has directed the University of Delhi, the Centre and the City Police to ensure that no defacement of public property occurs this election season.
Defacement of public property would include putting pictures, writing over property, pasting posters and putting hoardings. The Delhi High Court has instructed the Delhi University officials and the Delhi Police to adequately advertise the penal measures against the defacement of property within and outside the University Campus.
The previous year witnessed 1094 cases being filed and 686 people arrested for violating the provisions of the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007, as informed by Sanjay Ghosh, Delhi Government additional standing counsel.
The Delhi High Court has also instructed the Delhi University students warranted under bailable offence for defacing Delhi metro property the previous year; to participate in the meetings held for beautification of the DMRC sites.
Warnings have been given to all students about imprisonment upon being arrested for defacement of public property, this election season.
The court has set the next date for further hearing to be 12th of September, 2018.
