AC & EC Members of AAD-UTF have supported the demand of Gurus & Artistes for opening the admissions under ECA Quota for the forthcoming session. These Gurus and artistes wrote letters to the President and the Vice President of India with an appeal for admitting such students in DU. These are the points and suggestions which were made by these AC-EC members in their letter to VC:
- The university administration’s decision to discontinue this quota is sudden and abrupt, which has disappointed and demoralized a large number of students working very hard in honing their chosen area of performing art. Admissions in DU under this quota is one of the significant motivators for such students, who contribute in enriching the corporate life of the colleges.
- Intelligence has also come to acquire multi-dimensional meaning to include the performance in extra-curricular activities.
- This decision is like changing the rules of the game after the game has started as many students have been devoted themselves several years ago in pursuit of their callings to secure the seats under ECA quota.
- Generally, artists are very sensitive and get affected very easily. The COVID pandemic has caused more than usual stress among them and this ECA-quota-reverse is very difficult to handle for them.
- They quoted this from the representations of Gurus & Artistes, “Sir, we humbly request you to reconsider this decision and allow the arts to return in the reckoning from the ECA quota of Delhi University, the premium University of the country. If after years of ‘sadhana’ one cannot even distinguish oneself as the upholder of India’s ancient traditions, as one enters into college, why then would anyone want to put in so many years of sweat and hard work, that the arts demand. If we can take a generous view of the Rath Yatra , we implore you to take a generous view in this case too. We feel that in this case, the numbers can easily be managed through social distancing and normal COVID precautions of sanitizing and wearing of masks. During the dancing or singing trial the entry can be restricted and suitable distance can be maintained between artiste and judges.”
- The AC-EC members also demanded to give the admissions of ECA quota back to colleges following the university’s guidelines as the admissions are within the jurisdiction of college staff councils. The decentralized admission will also help in decongesting and physical distancing during the trials
