UGC recommends Institution of Eminence status to DU; Kharagpur IITs, Madras

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday granted Institution of Eminence (IoE) status to the Delhi University, Hyderabad University, BHU, and IIT-Madras and Kharagpur, while its two public universities – Jadhavpur University (Kolkata) and Anna University in Chennai – are subjected to conference with State governments.

The decision was taken at 542nd meeting of the UGC, which also noted that no extant institution which has not figured in any of the global/ national ranks would be adviced for the IoE status said by Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.

If any slot remains vacant after draining the above criteria, attention would be given to ‘yet to be established (greenfield)’ proposals, the statement said.

Among universities that have got the UGC advice for issuing letter of intent are Shiv Nadar Univeristy , Jamia Hamdard Univeristy, OP Jindal Global Univeristy.

Tezpur university, Aligarh Muslim University and Ashoka university failed to make the cut for IoE status, the officials said.
