Diwali – Festival of Lights

Diwali is the most popular festival of India. It is mainly celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all over the world. It marks the victory of good over evil, light over darkness. Lord Rama returns to his home in Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. To mark his arrival, people light up their houses with fairylights, diyas and colourful rangolis. It is a festival of joy. People visit their family and friends with sweets and gifts. They come together to eat good food, and enjoy the company of their loved ones, taking a break from the hectic, monotonous lives.

In order to prepare for Diwali, people start cleaning, painting and repairing and renovating their homes. This gives them a chance of maintaining the houses and other stuff once a year. Several sweets are either bought from the market or are prepared at home by the women. New clothes, vehicles and electronics are bought, since it is considered to be an auspicious occasion.

The most prominent feature of Diwali is the lightening of fireworks at night. People come out of their houses and enjoy the view of fireworks. This is particularly exciting for children.
