Student files HC Petition requesting bifurcation of marks from IIM- A

IIM- A

After a HC petition was filed by a student challenging weightage of personal interview in the total score for his admission into IIM Ahmedabad, the institute has requested for an extension in deadline to file the response. Under the RTI Act, the candidate has also requested the bifurcation of his marks, according to which he was denied admission.

In light of the petition and it’s possible outcomes, Justice Biren Vaishnav has ordered the prestigious business school to keep one seat vacant in the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) course for the session of 2020-2021.

The candidate, Raghav Gupta scored 206.86 marks in CAT 2019 examination, and was amongst the top 110 students all over India. After getting calls from several IIMs, he opted for IIM Ahmedabad, where he was denied admission based on his personal interview. When he asked the college to give a bifurcation of his marks, he was refused, and so he had to resort to filing a petition in the High Court.

According to the latest judgment by the Supreme Court, no educational institution can give more than 15% weightage to personal interview rounds. However in the case of IIMA, the personal interview rounds are given a 50% weightage, whereas the CAT scores are given a mere 25% weightage. So, he should be provided with the adequate bifurcation of his marks, according to his plea.
