Pinjra Tod blasts varsity gate over DU hostel curfew timings

The aspirant cumulative Pinjra Tod on Monday produce a protest against the curfew in hostel timings for women aspirants of Delhi University.

Asking the aspirants to join an night-long sit-in at North Campus, the cumulative said no action had been taken on a note that it had submitted to the DU VC last week.

Of the university office and blocked Mall Road for at least an hour, forcing the police to deflect traffic. Devangana Kalita, a member of Pinjra Tod, said that “the deputy appointee and the appointee came to meet us but did not listen to our demands”. The aspirants even broke one of the locks of the main gate.

The barriee was called off after 10 pm When a few Pinjra Tod members were called to meet the appointee.

Besides critical 24- hour entry into women’s hostels, the collective had asked for isolated hostels for disabled aspirants. According to the note, Pinjra Tod had been boosting the issues for the past 3 years but the university had shown no sign of action. “The Internal complaints committee on gender harrasment (ICC) code is still unimplemented, the curfew still remains, necessary infrastructural work undelivered”.

At “DU against curfew– all night protest”, many aspirants shared their experiences about living in hostels and many didn’t finding Hostel facilities at all.

Shweta Tiwari, a law faculty aspirant from Bihar said that many PWD aspirants have to stay at private hostels and PGs that are unsafe. These are far away in Dwarka and Rohini and food is pathetic. She also said that many girls didn’t convey out as they anxiety they would be thrown out of hotels. They want hotels with at-least 70-75% reservation.

The charter also called for need- based, not merit based, allocation of hostel seats and “strict implemention” of reservations in a women’s hostels.
