The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has asked the
Indian Management Institutes (IIMs) to take “corrective action”
work experience.
MHRD recalled in a letter sent to the IIMs last week that the
University Grants Commission Act 1956 which has no provision for a
one-year degree program.
The IIMs, however, view this directive as an infringement of their
autonomy and do not intend to stop the degree program.
In 2019, despite MHRD objections, four older IIMs— IIM
Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Indore, and Calcutta— pursued their plan to
award grades for their one-year postgraduate program.
Since the passage of the IIM Act over the one-year degree
programme, the HRD ministry and IIMs have been at loggerheads.
During various meetings with India’s premier management schools,
MHRD objected to the degree in 2018 and 2019 and also
communicated its reservations through official communications.
