badhai ho

The trailer of Badhaai Ho came out and it left us pleasantly surprised. The light-hearted family entertainer stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Dangal fame Sanya Malhotra in the lead, along with Neena Gupta, Surekha Sikhri and Gajraj Rao. Badhaai Ho is about a youngster, played by Ayushmann Khurrana, who finds out that his parents, played by Gupta and Rao, are expecting a child at their age. The trailer then shows how it affects their family dynamics in a funny way, while also the hero’s own love life. The film is directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma.

Malayalam movie lovers will, of course, relate Badhaai Ho with a 1994 movie called Pavithram. Considered as one of the finest movies that legendary actor Mohanlal starred in, Pavithram is viewed as a classic by cinema lovers. Shobana had played the female lead in this TK Rajeev Kumar movie that also stars Thilakan, Srividya, Innocent, Sreenivasan and Vinduja Menon (making her debut). Pavithram had two main strands, one of which was the protagonist finding out that his aged parents are having a baby.

The first half of Pavithram deals with this dilemma, with some light-hearted touches, as the family comes in terms with the new development. While Mohanlal’s Unnikrishnan manages to accept having a new sibling in his life, his elder brother Dr Ramakrishnan (Sreenivasan) and his wife are more reluctant to accept the parents are having a child before them.  However, while Badhaai Ho

is a light-hearted take on the whole issue, Pavithram gets serious later on. The mother dies during childbirth, and the father leaves the house over the guilt of killing his wife. The onus of taking care of the new-born baby falls on the hero, who dutifully accepts it, even though his own relationship with his beloved gets ruined in the process. And that’s where the first strand ends.

The second plotline is about how the young girl grows up and joins the college, only to drift away from the caring brother, leaving him depressed. The final scene will haunt you for days seeing how the transformation in the relationship had broken down the protagonist completely.
