A big gap is seen between the enrolment of male and female students in most of the colleges of Delhi University, the popular colleges being Kirori Mal College and Hindu College. Some institutions have even attempted to attract more girls by introducing a concession in the aggregate percentage for the particular subjects , but this trend is not that famous in other colleges.
Girls make only 30% of the student body at Kirori Mal College, principal Vibha Singh Chauhan conceded that gender ratio is skewed still. But she also insisted that apart from this the college provides equal opportunities to everyone irrespective of the gender.
The probable of the low percentage of girls in the college must be because of the girls hostel not being there. Parents prefer their girls living in the campus area rather than the unsafe rented places near the college.
Chauhan also disclosed that the idea of getting a girls hostel built is also making rounds and they might as well provide 1% relaxation in the aggregate percentage of girls from next session so that there are more girls taking admission in the college.
On the other hand side, Hindu College which has a girl hostel even then has only 39% of females amongst the students.Principal Anju Srivastava failed in providing a reason for the same. She said that they’ve always had an equal girls to boys ratio and that the number depends on merit rather than anything else.
1% relaxation in percentages allowed in various subjects in 18 DU colleges has fortunately helped to change the ratio of male and female in those institutions. In the last few years percentage has been fixed at 1% of arts, science and commerce courses before that the share of concession was fixed.
Principal of Aurobindo College Vipin Aggarwal, admitted that the percentage of girlsgirls has gone high from 25% to 35% because of the special rebate now. The concession has been extended for most of the subjects in Dyal Singh College. The principal explained that this step was taken so as to make the girls from marginalised sections attain education. Constant efforts are made so that girls comprise 50% of the students.
