2-day camps at Delhi colleges to enroll first-time electors

To enroll a maximum number of youngsters turning 18 by January 1, 2019, as electors, the election commission will arrange special camps on September 27 and 28 at colleges and technical institutions in the capital next week.

The camps, said officials, will give the worthy people another chance to get themselves registered in the electoral roll by submitting important documents to the college authorities, which will be delivered over to the district election offices.

According to chief electoral officer Vijay Dev, about 3% of the total electorate are first-time electors. As per the draft, electoral roll declared on September 1, there are about 13.6 million electors in Delhi. But only 1.10 lakh youngsters have enrolled since the publication of the prior draft in October 2017 and about 3 lakhs are left out.

In Delhi, 224 higher education institutions have been recognized, 110 colleges under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, 74 Delhi University colleges and 40 polytechnics and industrial training institutes, to arrange the camps. The principals have been selected as the nodal officers for the enrollment exercise.

The official said, “The teams from the 11 district electoral offices are in touch with these colleges. These teams will provide Form 6, which is meant for new voters, to colleges and will collect the filled up forms and process them,”.

District electoral teams are also in touch with some senior secondary government schools that could have aspirants in the age group of 18-19 years.

Publicity advertisements will also be placed at bus queue shelters, particularly in areas close to DU and permitted colonies. “We are also running jingles on nine FM channels to target first-time voters,” the official said.
